Bartonella species as a cause of culture-negative endocarditis in South Africa

چکیده
Previous reports have highlighted the high prevalence of blood culture negative endocarditis (BCNE) in South Africa. The Tygerberg Endocarditis Cohort (TEC) study is an ongoing prospective cohort patients with confirmed or suspected IE presenting to Academic Hospital, Cape Town, Current analysis includes that presented between November 2019 and August 2020. Forty four (44) been included this study. Fourteen 44 (31.8%) had BCNE. Further BCNE identified Bartonella species as most common causative organism (n=6; 43%). Other causes Mycoplasma (n=2). No cause could be 4 (9%). quintana was PCR valvular tissue 5 underwent urgent surgery. (n=6) average age 39 years equal gender distribution. clinical features were clubbing (n=5; 83%), anemia (n=4; 66.6%), haematuria (n=3; 50%), acute on chronic severe regurgitant lesion 50%) (n=2; 33.3%).The aortic valve involved 6 patients. During a mean follow-up period 251 days after diagnosis, no major adverse events occurred. Bartonella-associated important Western Imaging findings (in BCNE) significant destruction large vegetations not affected by congenital rheumatic disease should raise suspicion IE.

Culture-negative endocarditis: contribution of bartonella infections.
Two cases of bartonella endocarditis are described: one in a 55 year old homeless alcoholic man, caused by Bartonella quintana; the other in a 41 year old male with a history of exposure to cat fleas, caused by B henselae. Serological testing and polymerase chain reaction of the excised valves were used to identify the organisms. False positive serology for chlamydia was detected in one case.
متن کاملCulture-negative endocarditis due to Bartonella quintana.
Bartonella spp. was first described as a possible cause of culture-negative endocarditis in 1993, and has since emerged as a significant cause of this condition worldwide. We describe a complicated case of culture-negative endocarditis in an immune-competent male patient, which was confirmed on resected heart valves to have been caused by Bartonella quintana by broad-range 16S ribosomal RNA pol...
متن کاملBartonella vinsonii subsp. berkhoffii as an agent of afebrile blood culture-negative endocarditis in a human.
We report a case of endocarditis in a human infected with Bartonella vinsonii subsp. berkhoffii, which causes bacteremia and endocarditis in dogs. Bacterial identification was established by PCR amplification and sequencing of an intergenic spacer region (ITS1), 16S ribosomal DNA, and a gene encoding citrate synthase (gltA). Bartonella antibodies were detected by immunofluorescence.
متن کاملBartonella vinsonii subsp. arupensis as an agent of blood culture-negative endocarditis in a human.
We report the case of a patient hospitalized with endocarditis. The etiological diagnosis of Bartonella was suggested by detection of high titers of antibodies by immunofluorescence and Western blotting. Two different nested PCRs performed on sera identified Bartonella vinsonii subsp. arupensis by sequencing.
متن کاملBartonella species as a cause of infective endocarditis in the UK.
Bartonella spp. are increasingly implicated in infectious endocarditis cases in the UK. Herein, we attempted to quantify their role in this syndrome and explored the epidemiology of Bartonella-associated endocarditis in the UK. Between November 2005 and October 2010, samples from 685 endocarditis patients were submitted to the Health Protection Agency for Bartonella serology. Serological eviden...
